PARENTING, 14 GOSPEL PRINCIPLES That Can Radically Change Your Family
In the midst of folding laundry, coordinating carpool schedules, and breaking up fights, many parents get lost. Feeling pressure to do everything “right” and raise up “good” children, it’s easy to lose sight of our ultimate purpose as parents in the quest for practical tips and guaranteed formulas.
In this life-giving book, Paul Tripp offers parents much more than a to-do list. Instead, he presents us with a big-picture view of God’s plan for us as parents. Outlining fourteen foundational principles centered on the gospel, he shows that we need more than the latest parenting strategy or list of techniques. Rather, we need the rescuing grace of God—grace that has the power to shape how we view everything we do as parents. Freed from the burden of trying to manufacture life-change in our children’s hearts, we can embrace a grand perspective of parenting overflowing with vision, purpose, and joy.
When I read that I could review this book, I was so excited! We have 3 kids, ages 20, 18, and 9. With that age gap, I can definitely use some more parenting advice to help raise the third one. This book gives a "big gospel parenting worldview that will not only make sense of your task, but will change the way you approach it." That line really spoke to me, because that's the kind of advice I'm looking for, raising our 3rd child. In the introduction, the author goes through 4 areas of parenting and has you decide if you're an "owner" or "ambassador" parent. Looking at it through a practical level helps you learn how you need to change.
I've read through Chapter 6 so far and many things have stood out to me that I need to change to become a better parent. Chapter 2 is titled "Grace," and I learned kids aren't the cause of our actions. When something goes wrong, I, unfortunately, often blame my kids for what they made me do; like, bugging me while I'm making dinner, and I mess up the recipe. The book points out that I'm actually the one in need of God's grace at that moment, for my faults/sins. That really hit home with me.
Chapter 5 is titled "Identity." I learned that, "...what God values in your children is different from the values that drive your expectations and responses to your children." This also hit home with me because we recently had my son's parent teacher conference. He is still smart and above grade level, but he doesn't have the same drive to succeed and do extra that my older 2 have. That was disappointing to me, but what I learned from this chapter is that maybe God sees value in other aspects of my son, that I'm not looking at.
